Record breaking temperatures this summer have caused many homeowners problems with their HVAC units and homes. Most HVAC units have to work much harder to keep the home cool in the miserable summer temperatures. Many areas have reached over 100 degrees this summer, requiring extra work from the home's HVAC unit. There are many things to do to maintain your unit in order to keep it safe from the heat and to protect your home as well.

One important step that could save you loads of money in home repairs is ensuring there are proper drain lines from your unit. Check the unit often to be certain that water is properly draining, especially in excessive heat and humidity. If you avoid this important step, you could end up spending thousands of dollars on home repairs such as carpet and flooring. The job of the drain line is to make sure the condensation is being released from the home. When these lines are clogged, they will back up into the home. To avoid this problem, it is suggested that you put bleach down the lines monthly to guarantee the lines are free and clear of build up.

Many people leave their homes in the summer for a much needed family vacation. Sounds like a good time; however, many do not realize that leaving the air conditioning unit off while you are gone could cause numerous problems. First of all, in areas with high humidity, it does not take long for condensation to build up in a home without air conditioning. This can quickly cause a devastating mold problem inside your home. Walls, flooring, and carpets will all be destroyed. Furthermore, curtains, furniture, and even clothing may become drastically damaged.

There are a couple things you can do to avoid the humidity problem in your home while you are gone. First, leave your air conditioning unit on during your trip. Set the thermostat fairly high, but low enough to keep your home free of humidity. Also, if you do not want to risk leaving the air on while you are gone, consider the purchase of a humidistat. These devices will allow your unit to kick on only when needed to maintain low humidity levels inside your home. By purchasing a humidistat, you will save loads of money in the long run. Maintaining your home and HVAC unit in extreme temperatures could save you loads of money.
