If you are living in the US, it is not difficult to find museums where you can view Van Gogh paintings. Many of the more than 800 paintings that Van Gogh completed during his artistic life are part of the collections of museums across the US, in addition to being able to see his drawings, many of which served as studies for paintings, and watercolor paintings. Here is a partial listing of some of these museums, organized by location.

New York

The Museum of Modern Art. While their collection of Van Gogh paintings is modest in comparison with the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the MoMA is home to The Starry Night (1889), which is probably the best-known painting Van Gogh has produced. The MoMA also has the Portrait of the Postman Joseph Roulin, one of a series of portraits Van Gogh painted of the Roulin family and Olive Trees with the Alpilles in the Background, one of 18 paintings of olive trees Van Gogh did as a patient in the asylum at Saint-Rémy in 1889 and which he saw as a counterpart to The Starry Night.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The Met has a considerable number of Van Gogh works, including Wheat Field with Cypresses (July 1889), one of three similar paintings painted by Van Gogh at Saint-Rémy and L Arlésienne (Madame Ginoux with Books), one of six portraits the artist painted in 1888 and 1890 of the titular subject, who agreed to pose for Van Gogh and Paul Gauguin after Gauguin courted her. In addition, you can also see drawings which Van Gogh did as preliminary sketches for his paintings as well as watercolor paintings such as the Corridor of Saint-Paul Asylum in Saint-Rémy (1889), which is done with wateª¬¶Î 8 4

The Armand Center Museum of Art. Their collection features four Van Gogh paintings, including Lilacs (summer 1887), one of a series of still life paintings of flowers that Van Gogh did since he was unable to pay models to pose for the portraits he would rather have done; Parsonage Garden at Nunen in the Snow (January 1885), which he painted after his father became the minister at Nunen and he went to stay with his family from December 1883 to May 1885; and Trees in the Garden of Saint-Paul Hospital, which is one of several paintings he did of these gardens while a patient at the Saint-Paul Asylum.

Washington, D.C.

The National Gallery of Art. This famous museum includes not only works by Van Gogh but also those of other famed Impressionists and Post-Impressionists such as Gauguin, Monet and Degas. Van Gogh paintings that you can view at the National Gallery include the Baby Marcelle Roulin (1888), a portrait of the youngest member (four months) of the Roulin family; Olive Picking (1889), one of three paintings Van Gogh did of women picking olives; and Young Girl in White Standing Against a Background of Wheat (1890), one of three Van Gogh did of women standing against wheat fields during the last few months of his life.
