Wind Turbines and Just How they Operate

Going green is the only way to protect future life on this planet. Smaller living organisms face extinction due to their natural habitats being destroyed by man. Sources of energy that do not deplete natural resources have to be made mandatory for use. Wind energy by the use of wind turbines can be tapped into, lessening the carbon footprint left behind by other carcinogenic sources of energy.

The windmill is the best example of a wind turbine. Every part of the windmill plays a crucial role in its functioning. A tower is erected, the height of which depends on the area it'll be used in. If the landscape is bleak then there is less obstruction in using the air for energy. The speed of the wind can be affected if the air gets deflected due to anything in its path.

There are two or three blades, designed in shape and size to offer resistance to the thrust of the blowing air on it. The angle of the blade ensures the maximum amount of resistance. It is this resistance that produces kinetic energy.

The blades are fixed to a shaft which in turn is connected to a gearbox which unlike a car gearbox cannot be used to change speeds. There is a coupling between the gearbox and the generator, but again it is not like the clutch in a car, and is only used as a means of transmission. The generator is the unit which transforms the kinetic energy of the air flow into electrical energy.

This energy is transmitted through cables to a storage unit or to a grid for onward transmission to homes or large industries. Control units monitor each stage and record the amount of energy that is being generated. If this falls short or exceeds capacity then there is an automatic slowdown or shut off to avoid malfunctioning of the parts. There is also an automatic start factored in, which works when conditions are right.

Since windmills are largely left on their own with no active monitoring on a day to day basis unlike other power generating sources, it should be ensured that all parts for operation of the windmill are of the highest quality. Safety systems should be in place so that blowing air over speeds don't damage the functioning of the generator or blades.

The latest technology makes it possible to have sensors which can immediately identify any malfunctioning at any stage. A simple fact like keeping the blades clean can have a bearing on the overall functioning of a wind turbine.

Applying the same principle used in the working of windmills, homeowners now have the option of assembling a kit to use on their roof tops. The energy generated can fulfil a family's needs for power as an energy source for running appliances such as lights in the house. This energy can even be stored for use during seasons when there is not much wind.
