If the cabinets in your kitchen have scratches or are starting to look old and worn, you may consider trying to revitalize them. Cabinets are one of the most important and expensive aspects of a kitchen. If the cabinets do not look right, the whole kitchen seems out of date. Cabinets are also very expensive to replace and it can be a hassle to tear them all out. You might consider cabinet resurfacing over complete replacement. When you resurface your cabinets, you will save money and the results may be just as good as a total replacement.

When you choose cabinet replacement as your project, you will have to take a look at the material from which the cabinets were made. If you have laminate cabinets, all you have to do is choose a new color. Make sure it is a color that you really like and that will go with the rest of your kitchen. You do not want to have to redo the cabinets in another year or two.

If you have stainless steel cabinets, your kitchen likely looks contemporary or even industrial. You may want to blend some black or even wood into the cabinets to freshen them up and get rid of any dents and scratches that may have appeared over the years.

Most people have wood cabinets and there are plenty of things you can do to this type of material to make it look fresh and new. If your wood cabinets have a stain on them already, you can paint over that stain with a simple color, or you can remove the stain, strip the wood, and start over with a lighter or darker stain. Once the wood has been stripped of all of its color, you may even decide to leave it natural. At that point, all you would have to do would be varnish the wood to protect it. The grain of the wood would show through and it would have a shiny look. If you want to re-stain the wood after it has been stripped, choose a color that will accentuate the grain to your liking. The darker the stain, the more the grain will stand out if you apply it correctly. There is no right or wrong answer when it comes to stain. It is all a matter of personal preference and what will look best in your kitchen.

It might be a good idea to experiment on the inside of one of the cabinet doors. Paint or stain it how you think you might like it and then take it back into the kitchen and examine the effect in that room's light. If you like what you see, go ahead with the full cabinet resurfacing.
