Windows are one of the more overlooked elements of a home. As long as the window is not broken or so dirty a person can't see through the glass, then windows are considered in perfect condition. However, as a home ages so do the windows, and at some point they will need to be replaced. Often times, however, the cost of replacement windows will pay for themselves over time with energy savings. Window design and manufacturing has improved over the years and many older homes still have their original, single pane windows which are known for letting in cold air into the house in winter time or letting air conditioned air escape to the outdoors in the summer.

The biggest factor in determining the price of a window replacement project is whether a home owner will simply replace the glass in a window or if the whole frame, which may be old or rotting, needs to be replaced as well. If only the glass is replaced, an average sized window will cost $300-$700 to replace. However this cost could double in a situation where the window frame must be replaced or repaired. In the end, the cost to replace just the window glass for an average three bedroom home will cost $3000-$7000, while total window construction and replacement including the glass and frame will cost $6000-$14000.

This is still a relatively large price range however, which leaves many home owners curious what might keep them on the lower or higher end of the cost spectrum. This will depend on considerations such as the shape of windows and the quality of the window chosen to replace old windows. Standard sized windows are obviously going to less expensive to replace than a custom window that is an awkward shape or in a hard to reach location. Additionally, not all replacement windows are of the same caliber. Energy efficient replacement windows may cost more than the standard double pane window. Remember though that efficient windows save costs on heating and cooling bills and often pay for themselves within a few years.

Sometimes homeowners attempt to cut to cost of replacing windows by installing them by themselves. Although this is a valid option for a skilled and experienced handyman, it can be tricky for a novice. Homeowners who are not used to do-it-yourself projects will most likely save money and certainly save time by hiring a professional to install replacement windows.

The best way for home owners to determine the cost of replacement windows is to call professionals in the area for price quotes which are typically determined based on how many square inches of glass total will be replaced as well as the cost for window frames if necessary. Labor, cleanup and disposal should be included in the price quote as well. For a fresh new look, or at least view out of a home, replacing windows is often well worth the cost.
