Antioxidants are good things, but so good are they that many people have a hard time explaining them to others who don't quite get how they work. Something that has an antioxidant property is something that could help defend the body from free radicals roaming around, and these antioxidant-laden foods could be any food, fruit or vegetable, because there are just too many sources of them. But what are the benefits of eating food with antioxidant properties, and just how do they work inside the body?

There are many benefits of eating food with antioxidant properties. People all over the world have been hearing just how good a thing an antioxidant is, but what does it really do to the body? For one, an antioxidant could take the form of vitamins and nutrients. There are many vitamins and nutrients that could help the body eliminate free radicals.

The health benefits of antioxidant-laden foods are so many that most people could not believe that they are true. For one, these substances are known to put off certain types of cancers such as breast cancer, ovarian cancer, prostate cancer, cervical cancer, pancreatic cancer and many more, as they are known in general to prevent the growth of tumors the best way they could. Another benefit is for the heart. Do you know that some antioxidants are good for the heart? Arrhythmia and high blood pressure are just some of the things that an antioxidant that goes by the name of Omega-3 can fix. Lutein is also an antioxidant found in the eyes, and they are known to contribute to superior eye health and vision, and prevent medical conditions like cataracts, and eye muscle degeneration. Kiwi, cabbage, broccoli, and kale are good sources of lutein.

If you have been studying about antioxidants, it would be very weird for you not to come across the term "free radicals". What are these free radicals? The body is full of cells, molecules, and many different things that you would not see with your naked eye. However, the things that go around inside the body are not always good things.

Free radicals are things that would go around the body and they lack certain molecules - electrons to be specific. Free radicals could damage cells, and these cells could damage other cells, and so on and so forth, making it quite easy for the body to develop or catch a disease. An antioxidant helps the body by giving out its electrons, but losing one or some in the process. A whole lot of extra antioxidants is not good for the body, though there still isn't an amount declared to be a good amount for everyone.

Knowing how an antioxidant works usually results to something good, and this is knowing just how important these antioxidants are to the body. Now that you know just how good they are, there aren't really many reasons for you not to buy food and supplements that would help defend and cleanse your body from free radicals.
