The time has come for you to reap the fruits of month after month of saving up for the holidays. Eleven months of saving a few dollars here and there has finally paid off. Tomorrow will be the official start of your online shopping spree for the holidays. Finally you can buy that pair of stilettos you have been drooling over for the past month and a half. Nothing beats online retail therapy this time of year.
Deciding to buy all the stuff you wanted to buy online is understandable. No more standing in line, fighting over parking space, walking through a sea of human beings in all its cramped and raucous glory. Now you can shop at the comfort of your own home. You choose the time you want to shop, and you do not even have to change clothes (note: Your neighbor buys organic coffee online at 2 a.m. in his pajamas. Sounds like fun right?).
While spending all your saved up money, do not forget to take some common sense with you. Cyberspace is not just about walking on strawberry fields under a starry, starry night. Bad people are just around the corner waiting to take all the fun (and your money) away from you if you are not careful. Here are some tips for a fun holiday online shopping spree:
Do your homework. Never buy on impulse. There are a lot of online shopping websites to choose from and you want to get the best deals on every item that you plan to buy. Most likely, you will be visiting a number of online stores to compare prices. Collect as much information as you need before deciding where to buy an item.
Discounts are all over the place, you just need to know where to look. Online shopping websites offer a lot of discounts which may last for a day or throughout the holiday period. The good stuff does not come cheap nowadays, which is why you need to take the opportunity when it shows up. But remember to burn up some brain cells when deciding, okay?
Better do it at home. When purchasing stuff at online shopping websites never do it on a public computer. There is a high probability that your personal and credit card information would be intercepted in a public place. A common ploy done by the bad guys is to hang around near public computers such as in a library. Sometimes they slip a little program called a keylogger which can create a record of the keystrokes you did in a public computer. Once you leave, the bad guy retrieves the information, and you will definitely swear out loud when you see unauthorized charges on your statement after the holidays ("I don't remember buying a laptop dear...").
Online shopping is fun when done in a safe and smart manner. A little vigilance and some common sense will make a lot of difference. Besides, you'll be doing the same thing next year.
