What is it that makes hybrid bikes so fashionable? Essentially a hybrid blends those features of mountain and road bikes that most appeal to the leisure cyclist. Many people do not need the off-road ability of a true MTB, and discover that the heavy weight and wide tyres make cycling on the road too much like hard work. On the other hand, those who want to explore off-road a bit more find that the narrow tyres and riding position of a road bike just won't work.
So how are these challenges resolved in a hybrid?
Flat handlebars. These are far more appropriate for the everyday cyclist than the drop handlebars fitted to road bikes. It's simplier and easier to vary hand position regularly for comfort and thickly padded grips absorb shocks.
Semi-slick tyres, with a thickness somewhere between road and mountain bike tyres. This gives a great blend of grip for the grass together with low rolling-resistance for the road. The wheels are customarily road size, 700mm, instead of the 26" rims fitted to mountain bikes.
Either a beefed-up road frame, or an extended MTB frame, according to what the designer wants to achieve. The most widely used frame material is aluminium. Top-of-the-range bikes are frequently of carbon fibre. Suspension forks feature on many models. There is frequently a choice of mens or womens models.
The gears ordinarily have the low ratios needed for climbing hills, but will also incorporate a bigger chainring for speed on the road.
However, no compromise is perfect for everyone, so there is a decision to be made depending on the style of cycling you will be doing mainly, and also on your personal taste.
Will you be riding mostly on the road, with occasional forays onto the towpath or track? For you, a road-bike inspired design would most likely be the best option. It will have a slim frame and fairly narrow tyres and so made for speediness. If however you like to do a greater amount of off-road riding, you will probably look for a bike with suspension forks a wider tyres.
So the choices are available, whatever your style of riding. Hybrid bikes offer the best of all worlds for the cyclist who merely wants to get out on the road.
