All the models in the Kona Dew series represent good value street hybrid bikes, from a well-respected producer, with tons of style.
They are hybrids that are predominantly directed towards street riding - to work and back say. Then again like any good hybrid they will also take you out on the lanes at the weekend. How do the different models compare?
All have frames constructed from Kona's 7005 aluminium. The sloping top tube means that there is a safe standover clearance, in addition that all the models are unisex. The geometry varies to some extent through the collection. They all have fittings for mudguards though - essential in a commuting bike.
They all have 700mm road wheels and all use Kona's own design Project 2 aluminium fork (with the exception of the FS suspension model). All have triple chainsets for maximum flexibility - useful ranges for hills and cruising.
The different models show enhancements and upgrades in the components you would expect - gears, brakes and wheelsets.
The Kona Dew City is the entry level model:-
o 21 gears with useful ratios, from basic Shimano components. The EZ Fire shifters are superb to use.
o V-brakes from Tektro - plenty of muscle and simple to care for.
o Flat pedals, wide tyres and a Comfort saddle mean that this is a sensible and relaxing bike to use.
o Very competitive price.
The second bike in the series is the Kona Dew . In just about all respects it’s identical to the City. However there are:-
o 24 gears from three ranges with slightly enhanced ratio spreads.
o Somewhat improved wheel rims and front derailleur.
o More robust V-brakes form Tektro.
o A truly nice sensible and stylish bike.
The Kona Dew Plus is the next bike up the range. The major upgrade to this model is in the brakes:-
o Hydraulic disc brakes from Shimano for enhanced stopping power and wet-weather performance.
o Improved rear derailleur to Shimano Deore for more smoothness and reliability.
Moving up the series we come to the Kona Dew Deluxe:-
o Twenty-seven gears from the upgraded Shimano 9 speed cassette.
o Improvements to the front mech, brakes, wheel rims and gear shifters.
o A change to the frame - a superbly tapered top tube.
o Narrower 32 mm tyres for greater road performance, maybe at the expense of some off-road capabilities.
If you want suspension, the Kona Dew FS is the model to go for:-
o The front fork is changed to a Suntour suspension unit, great for smoothing out the ruts.
o A suspension seatpost will smooth out more painful vibration.
o More slope to the top tube.
o Extra help on the hills from smaller chainrings.
o Upgraded front gear mech for smoother shifting between chainrings
o A suspension bike at a superb price.
The Kona Dr Dew is the top of the range. This is a bike designed for quick commuting:-
o Rigid Project Two front fork and tapered tube frame.
o Shimano hydraulic disc brakes for all-weather operation.
o The use of more Shimano road bike components, from the Sora range, reveal that this is a bike made for road performance.
o The wheel rims are sleeker, as is the saddle.
o The handlebar is smarter, the pedals as well.
o Smart grey paintwork, enhanced by the decals means that this is a bike that will get seen.
So it can probably be seen that there is a bike for everybody in the Kona Dew range. Very competitive prices too.
